The 2017 Oscar Awards of Children’s Books (Part I)

Posted on February 4, 2017 Leave a Comment

In the last few weeks, movies have been getting the lion’s share of entertainment attention – the Golden Globes, the SAG awards, and of course the Oscars. But here at BookishBoys, let’s not forget the recent announcement of some big awards for children’s literature too:

The American Library Association’s 2017 Youth Media (books, audio and video) Awards.

While some of the award categories were familiar to me – e.g. the Newbery and Caldecott Medals – there were many others (no doubt equally prestigious) that I am delighted to learn about for the first time. The “Schneider Family Book Award for books that embody an artistic expression of the disability experience,” or the “Alex Awards for the 10 best adult books that appeal to teen audiences”…So great! The list of winning titles and honorees is a trove of potentially great reading material.

You can check out the complete list on the ALA’s awards page.

The list is presented there in rather dry fashion, so I am posting some of the different awards with book covers and the publishers’ recommended age groups here on BookishBoys over the next couple of days. Click to see Parts II, III, IV & V of this post.

Book gifts

Book Bonanza 2

Books dominated the gifts my boys received this Christmas 2018. Between aunts and uncles, grandparents, parents and Santa, the boys made out like very successful book bandits indeed. I would have been very jealous about their haul, except that my own gifts included some great books too. Read more…Book Bonanza 2

Smore Magazine Cover

Give me Smore: a science magazine for girls (and boys)

Magazine subscriptions are a great way to engage reluctant readers. Magazines provide content in bite-sized chunks; almost always contain wonderful photographs, graphics, and comics; and include ideas for hands-on activities. There’s also nothing quite like the feeling of getting something fun in the mail every month with your name on it.

I recently came across a children’s magazine, a newbie on the scene, that I wanted to share with you: Smore Magazine. Read more…Give me Smore: a science magazine for girls (and boys)

Headed toward family, hearth and home

It’s Thanksgiving here in the U.S., and with that comes the onset of the holiday season. Maybe you’re driving to your parents’ right now for a Thanksgiving feast… maybe you will only be heading home in a few weeks for Christmas, Hannukah or the New Year. Perhaps you will travel by air or by sea, by road or by rail, or perhaps only by way of your dreams.

No matter what the mode, know that the journey home is a universal experience. It remains a powerful and persistent motif in all of literature, with children’s literature being no exception. Read more…Headed toward family, hearth and home
