Book Bonanza 2

Posted on January 19, 2019 Leave a Comment

Books dominated the gifts my boys received this Christmas 2018. Between aunts and uncles, grandparents, parents and Santa, the boys made out like very successful book bandits indeed. I would have been very jealous about their haul, except that my own gifts included some great books too: Becoming by Michele Obama and These Truths: A History of the United States by Jill Lepore, Cover This Country Like Snow by Kristine Zeigler (a dear friend), and Every Grain of Rice by Fuchsia Dunlop.

As for the kids, they are slowly but steadily making their way through their piles (and are raiding my stash as well—my 14-yr old is currently deep into Becoming). I am sharing the list with you (with their permission) as it may spark ideas for your own MG/YA readers and will post reviews of the ones we’re enjoying in the weeks and months ahead. If you enjoy this list, make sure to also check out our 2016 Book Bonanza list.

Smore Magazine Cover

Give me Smore: a science magazine for girls (and boys)

Magazine subscriptions are a great way to engage reluctant readers. Magazines provide content in bite-sized chunks; almost always contain wonderful photographs, graphics, and comics; and include ideas for hands-on activities. There’s also nothing quite like the feeling of getting something fun in the mail every month with your name on it.

I recently came across a children’s magazine, a newbie on the scene, that I wanted to share with you: Smore Magazine. Read more…Give me Smore: a science magazine for girls (and boys)

Halloween audiobooks

Ghouls, ghosts, and some audiobook greats

Here in New England, the signs are all around. Leaves are floating down and starting to rustle across the streets.  Storefronts are starting to fill up with seriously spooky stuff. It all means just one thing to kids – Halloween is around the corner.

So what’s on your playlist this October? Do you have a sufficiently spooky audiobook going, to set the tone for the season? To get you started, here are a few Read, Kids, Read! recommendations for the older set. Read more…Ghouls, ghosts, and some audiobook greats
