Oscars of Kids Books (II): The John Newbery Medal

The movies have their Oscars, and children’s books have their American Library Association’s 2017 Youth Media (books, audio and video) Awards. I will be posting the different awards with book covers and the publishers’ recommended age groups here over the next couple of days (you can find more links on Part I of my post).

Here are the 2017 winner and honorees of the John Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children:

Newbery Winner
The Girl Who Drank The Moon
Age Group: 10-14

 

 

Newbery Honor
Freedom Over Me: Eleven Slaves, Their Lives and Dreams Brought to Life by Ashley Bryan
Age group: 6-10

Give me Smore: a science magazine for girls (and boys)

Magazine subscriptions are a great way to engage reluctant readers. Magazines provide content in bite-sized chunks; almost always contain wonderful photographs, graphics, and comics; and include ideas for hands-on activities. There’s also nothing quite like the feeling of getting something fun in the mail every month with your name on it.

Funny guys, great advice

A few days ago I attended “Guys Read: How to Get and Keep Boys Reading,” a wonderful event hosted at “An Unlikely Story,” Jeff Kinney’s gorgeous bookstore in Plainville, Massachusetts.
