Geniuses in the house!

Posted on May 15, 2017 Leave a Comment

Does the name Ken Jennings ring a bell? The trivia genius who famously won 74 consecutive Jeopardy games in 2004, making quiz-show history? Jennings is clearly a walking encyclopedia, but his true talent may lie in encouraging kids to embrace curiosity through the books he has written after his Jeopardy reign. His excellent nonfiction series for kids take on topics – Dinosaurs, Greek Mythology, Outer Space, etc. – and explore related facts, trivia and anecdotes in a thoroughly enjoyable way. Read more…Geniuses in the house!

The boy who waited for winter

Posted on March 19, 2017 Leave a Comment

Snowflake Bentley Book Cover

Winter this year started with a whimper, but seems to be determined to go out with a bang. Falling temperatures, snowstorms and snow days in March – I, for one, am ready for spring to get here quick.

But, I imagine there was one boy who loved long-tapered winters, and waited for the return of snow each year. This is his story. Read more…The boy who waited for winter

Here’s to the daydreamers…

The Dreamer audiobook cover

There are few things I look forward to less than doing laundry. And with two active boys in the house, there is always a mountain of it waiting to be washed or transferred or folded at any given time. It is an endless effort to conquer the mountain, and I have my systems, as I am sure you have yours!

But these systems have their adversaries, and if you have a magpie for a child, not least of these are the ubiquitous pockets full of assorted trash: found pennies, baby pinecones, odd shaped stones, gnarled bits of bark, a crushed flower, downy feathers, each leaving a grainy debris that is near impossible to clear out completely. Read more…Here’s to the daydreamers…

Book gifts

Book Bonanza 2

Books dominated the gifts my boys received this Christmas 2018. Between aunts and uncles, grandparents, parents and Santa, the boys made out like very successful book bandits indeed. I would have been very jealous about their haul, except that my own gifts included some great books too. Read more…Book Bonanza 2

Smore Magazine Cover

Give me Smore: a science magazine for girls (and boys)

Magazine subscriptions are a great way to engage reluctant readers. Magazines provide content in bite-sized chunks; almost always contain wonderful photographs, graphics, and comics; and include ideas for hands-on activities. There’s also nothing quite like the feeling of getting something fun in the mail every month with your name on it.

I recently came across a children’s magazine, a newbie on the scene, that I wanted to share with you: Smore Magazine. Read more…Give me Smore: a science magazine for girls (and boys)
