Try this Treehouse

The 39 Story Treehouse book cover

I had a Eureka! moment at Lightroom, one of my favorite bookstores in Bangalore, this summer. You see, I have been searching long and hard for an engaging, illustrated series for the 7-11 set that isn’t saturated with middle-grade cynicism, loser-cool, or gross-out potty humor (Books, I love you guys, but you know who you are!). And when my eyes alighted on The 13-Story Treehouse by Andy Griffin and Terry Denton, I knew I had found what I was looking for. Read more…Try this Treehouse

13th birthday candles

Who knew? I hadn’t counted before. But once I had to put 13 candles on a birthday cake, it came to me! Well now, we are officially a family with a teenager on board.

Funny guys, great advice

A few days ago I attended “Guys Read: How to Get and Keep Boys Reading,” a wonderful event hosted at “An Unlikely Story,” Jeff Kinney’s gorgeous bookstore in Plainville, Massachusetts.

The evening was a chance to hear from a great line-up of authors beloved by most boys. Read more…Funny guys, great advice

An Ambassador of a different kind

Posted on May 16, 2017 Leave a Comment

Countries appoint many Ambassadors, hundreds of them typically, to represent themselves to other nations, international organizations and global programs.

But did you know that we also have a National Ambassador of Young People’s Literature? Meet Gene Luen Yang. Read more…An Ambassador of a different kind

Out of the desert and into wonderland, thanks to Brian Selznick

Posted on October 20, 2016 Leave a Comment

Reading dry spells: Periods where nothing in the library entices, and the assigned books from school seem just another chore. Every reader has had those, and my boys have succumbed to them at various times. During one particularly arid spell, I was thrilled to discover Brian Selznick’s work on our public library shelves. These proved to be our ride out of the desert and back into wonderland. Read more…Out of the desert and into wonderland, thanks to Brian Selznick

Book gifts

Book Bonanza 2

Books dominated the gifts my boys received this Christmas 2018. Between aunts and uncles, grandparents, parents and Santa, the boys made out like very successful book bandits indeed. I would have been very jealous about their haul, except that my own gifts included some great books too. Read more…Book Bonanza 2

Smore Magazine Cover

Give me Smore: a science magazine for girls (and boys)

Magazine subscriptions are a great way to engage reluctant readers. Magazines provide content in bite-sized chunks; almost always contain wonderful photographs, graphics, and comics; and include ideas for hands-on activities. There’s also nothing quite like the feeling of getting something fun in the mail every month with your name on it.

I recently came across a children’s magazine, a newbie on the scene, that I wanted to share with you: Smore Magazine. Read more…Give me Smore: a science magazine for girls (and boys)

Here’s looking at you, Brown Bear!

Head to Amherst, MA by October 9 to hunt for a very special Brown Bear and his friends. They’ll be waiting for you in popular spots all over town. Hike Bare Mountain (to see Brown Bear), wander through wildflowers at Hampshire College (to see Red Bird), or eat at a Black Sheep Deli (to see Black Sheep)…and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the beloved classic Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See. Organized by the Eric Carle Museum, this pop-up exhibition and scavenger hunt celebrates the book that launched Eric Carle’s amazing career as an illustrator.  Read more…Here’s looking at you, Brown Bear!
