Harry Potter Illustrated Book 1

As you may recall, I published a post some months ago about how my boys refused to read Harry Potter.

Hope sprung anew when I discovered the unabridged, illustrated series. Well, I am here to give you an update on my experiment. Read more…The Harry Potter Experiment Update

The Harvard Museum of Fantastic Beasts

Posted on December 6, 2016 Leave a Comment

Well, actually, it is the Harvard Museum of Natural History (HMNH). But this gem of a museum may well claim the above title, with the amazing specimens in its permanent displays.

And this winter, through January 8, 2017, HMNH is going a step further, celebrating the latest Harry Potter movie with a Fantastic Beasts Scavenger Hunt. Read more…The Harvard Museum of Fantastic Beasts

Audiobook review: The Graveyard Book

Posted on October 5, 2016 Leave a Comment

Title: The Graveyard Book
Author: Neil Gaiman
Narrator: Full cast recording (Derek Jacobi, Neil Gaiman, Julian Rhind-Tutt et al)
Length: 7h 47m
Format: Full length story
Age Group: 10+

This is a superb, full-cast reading that brings to life a luminous book by Neil Gaiman. It is not for the faint-of-heart though. The book starts with a murder. While the murder scene is swift and more implied than described, it is quite scary. The lone survivor, a toddler, wanders into a nearby graveyard, where he is adopted by its otherworldly inhabitants and given the name Nobody Owens, or Bod for short. And from there the tale turns into a spooky, but absolutely enthralling, coming-of-age tale. Read more…Audiobook review: The Graveyard Book

Book gifts

Book Bonanza 2

Books dominated the gifts my boys received this Christmas 2018. Between aunts and uncles, grandparents, parents and Santa, the boys made out like very successful book bandits indeed. I would have been very jealous about their haul, except that my own gifts included some great books too. Read more…Book Bonanza 2

Smore Magazine Cover

Give me Smore: a science magazine for girls (and boys)

Magazine subscriptions are a great way to engage reluctant readers. Magazines provide content in bite-sized chunks; almost always contain wonderful photographs, graphics, and comics; and include ideas for hands-on activities. There’s also nothing quite like the feeling of getting something fun in the mail every month with your name on it.

I recently came across a children’s magazine, a newbie on the scene, that I wanted to share with you: Smore Magazine. Read more…Give me Smore: a science magazine for girls (and boys)

Nonfiction friction

“How do I get my child to read nonfiction?” This is a common (often despairing) question I get when mentioning the blog. If you face a similar tussle, here’s one idea for ending the friction: Try a magazine subscription. Take a break from force-feeding dry tomes for now, and attempt a more digestible format. And as we get into gift-giving season, keep in mind: Subscriptions are the some of the best “gifts-that-keep-on-giving.” For the top recommendations from Read, Kids, Read!,  Read more…Nonfiction friction
